PPCD stands for Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities. We have both small group and individual instruction happening in our classroom. We participate in Circle Time where we experience social interactions, practice following directions, attending to task, make choices, and practice our cognitive development skills. We have numerous opportunities to generalize our skills into the natural environment as we play and discover the many areas set up in our classroom that promote learning. When weather/temperature permits, we have a recess time on our playground where we practice Gross Motor skills. We have several planned art and sensory activities throughout the week that are directly related to our current theme.
We follow the same basic schedule everyday. Our goal is to actively engage the students in learning in every activity we do throughout the day. We work on IEP goals that are based on the individual needs of each student as well as activities that expose our learners to parts of the Pre-Kindergarten Curriculum/Guidelines. We use a variety of instructional approaches to enhance the curriculum and the diverse levels of each student.
Thematic units planned for this year include activities about the seasons, holidays, animals, food, health, body parts, growing things, living on a farm, friends, and things that go. We have thematic units that last for 2-4 weeks. Activities are designed to increase language development and early literacy skills. Activities could include cooking, art, and hands-on explorations. IEP goals will be incorporated into the thematic instruction and activities.
We also have an amazing team of paraprofessionals who support our learners as well as therapists who work with learners depending upon their IEP and SOS.
